“Squaring the Square” is the latest by the avant-garde fashion designer Lisa Shahno. This structural futuristic inspired collection is both elegant and edgy but maybe not as wearable on the street. However, it resembles of an beautiful architectural building built on clothes as the whole collection is based on rectangular pieces and bonded in different order. Fashion and architect designs alwayscompliment each other and I think Lisa already has a special gift of creatively combining the both.
Even though the new trend of knitwear has not really hit our shore yet but Femmething has already stocked up and sourcing for possible knitting lessons. But there is one designer has been quietly knitting his way up through his collection and he is by the name of Tom Scott. His latest collection “Home is Where the Heart Is” has shown unexpected functions of knitwear, adorned with bed ruffles, hair nets, air vents and curtains that sets a new standard of home comfort attire.
Let’s go shopping at the minimarket! Yes, I mean it. How can you actually resist? Check out those candy colours sweet looking sunglasses, then the chic cap-toed boot with a wooden platform, not convince yet? How about a more cobalt version of their classic back-zip wedge? Or the lace-ups? Oh, and those lovely patent and suede slip-ons; and those hats! I know now you are with me.
Wondering which minimarket I am talking about? Minimarket is a Swedish label that was crowned by Swedish Elle Designer of 2006. It is no surprise that minimarket is in high demand. Check out their latest Spring ’10 collection, take a good 30 mins then we shall go shopping at the minimarket.
Talking about body modification through clothing, can’t help but remind me of Leigh Bowery on how he modified his physic and silhouette through clothing. Then, in the 90′s many designers began to transform basic human silhouette into something more out of this world. Designers like Paco Robanne, Hussein Chalayan, Yohji Yamamoto, Thierry Mugler and to today’s Martin Margiela, Gareth Pugh, Alexander McQueen are no stranger to the scene.
Not long ago we heard about Irina Shaposnikova‘s knitwear collection, now here is her latest of her Crystallographica which is her graduate collection at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts 09 show… She has ventured into reshaping the silhouette which represent the futuristic movement that we are heading to. Even we now have only one Lady Gaga, but I assume in few years time, we all will be rocking these immaculate futuristic suits and make friends with robots.

We heard much about eighties inspired fashion, but how many eighties’ fashion labels are still surviving? Take Bodymap for an instance, even if you look at it today; it is still ever so inspiring and Bodymap’s aesthetic is still very much relevant with today’s fashion. Even Kylie Minogue is all over the brand and ready to gear up for her recent tour with the brand. Bodymap has always been the original eighties brand with outrageous shows and even legendary Boy George, dancer Michael Clark and Leigh Bowery all had made catwalk appearances for the label.
Today we take a look at the selection of the images from Bodymap’s archives to celebrate the brand’s vision, creativity and ground-breaking designs. A fashion house that never goes out of style.
Knit. Knit. Knitting. Takes time. A lot of time in fact. What happens if handmade, loosing control, do not think about practical things, distorting and transforming human body? Result only in discovering new shapes and art, an artist more than a fashion designer and she is Sandra Backlund.
Her work has graced many famous fashion publications from i-D, Wallpaper to Another Magazine. Her unique way of wool collage knitting is both stunning and impressive.
“I have found the ultimate way to express myself.” said Sandra Backlund. And we couldn’t agree more!
Not Chaca the genus in the catfish family, in fact, Chaca is the name of the new must have jewelry collection of designer, Chaca Jacoben. Her unique work is always ahead of the Copenhagen street trends, hand made and very limited.
Living in London now, in her 2nd year of study in jewelry design. Femmething is glad to catch up with Chaca herself for some Q & A.
The latest from Daniel Palillo is an interesting one. We all know that by now, 80′s references are on its way out and slowly you begin to see more references of the 90′s. And Daniel Palillo Spring Summer 2010 hit right on the spot, with punk fashion, skulls and cut outs reminds me of the brit pop/grunge era when rock plays an important role in fashion. Remember Nirvana, Oasis or Garbage? So, standby your Underground shoes, Red Wings or Dr.Martens; we are ready to hit the street! Oh, and check out the little “exorcist” action in the pictures!
2 month old Bulubulu Studio is a collaboration between KL-based Miss Mawk & Mr. Baby- an ongoing collaboration that specializes in hand painted shoes, tote bags and plushies. What really caught our eyes were the intricate detailing of the shoes hand painted by Miss Mawk herself, who also happens to be a sign language interpreting student by day (nice!) We manage to snatch some time off the dynamic duo at Youth ‘09 to grill them with some questions about their label.
How did Bulubulu Studio came about?
(M): A friend actually came up to me with a beaten up shoe years ago asking me to work some magic to salvage his shoe. Thanks to my ever so tight budget, I could only do what I did best- to doodle. So I doodled my way and let’s just say the rest is history.
What inspires you?
(M): I know it sounds crazy but I get a lot of opinion and ideas from my 11 year old brother. He would throw me an idea out of the blue and I’ll just start doodling, haha.
What materials do you use to create your work?
(M): I start by drawing the skeleton using a pen then hand paint them with both acrylic and fabric paint.
How long does it usually take you to custom design a pair of shoe?
(M): Usually about 2 days, but it really depends on how complex the design is.
What is your price range for the hand painted shoes?
(M): The price ranges from RM60-RM150. Pieces with more details are higher in price and vice versa.
Where do you see Bulubulu studios in say 5-10 years?
We’d like to take it as far as German-based Bobsmade have with their team of designers offering the public with an array of design products. Hopefully we’ll be able to recruit more people in the future offering more than just shoes and bags in our product range.
Any last words for Femmething readers?
Seeing that we’re really new in the scene, we hope to gain as much support and advice from all of you. Throw us any comments when you see fit so that we’ll be able to offer you with the best we possibly can.
Bulubulu studios will be having one-off special designs for Valentines Day. Check out their other designs on their blog-shop.
